Labor Day, also known as the “workingmen’s holiday” was started by the Central Labor Union in New York City in 1882.  In 1884, it was decided that the first Monday in September would be the Labor Day holiday.  It became an official federal holiday in 1894.  This day is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.

Labor Day has also become known as the unofficial end of the summer season, with many people celebrating the long weekend cooling off in the water either at beaches or on lakes.  Others celebrate with local parades and festivals.
