Meranti Plywood / Lauan / Luan vs. RevolutionPly ®

RevolutionPly Meranti Lauan Alternative Plywood

There are many clear advantages to choosing RevolutionPly® plywood over Meranti plywood and Lauan/Luan plywood.  RevolutionPly® is manufactured from sustainable wood sources and is a long-term, better alternative to Meranti plywood and Lauan plywoodRevolutionPly® is environmentally friendly, has a consistent blemish-free appearance, is a higher quality panel than Meranti and Lauan plywood, and comes with the best packaging in the industry.

Meranti plywood (Lauan) is a generic term for imported tropical hardwood plywood.  There are many serious disadvantages to using Meranti plywood.  The raw material for Meranti plywood originates from poorly managed non-sustainable sources.  The over-harvesting of Meranti has led to the destruction of the tropical rain forests.  Meranti plywood is badly packaged which often leads to product damage during shipment.  There are many sub species of Meranti plywood, including Light Red Meranti, Dark Red Meranti, White Meranti, and Yellow Meranti. The variations in color and sub-specie can result in the inconsistent appearance and density of Meranti plywood panels.  The panels may contain natural resins that can make glue bonding and finishing difficult.

     The benefits of using RevolutionPly®

  • RevolutionPly® plywood is made from sustainable wood sources and contains no tropical hardwoods. The veneers are produced from trees that are harvested in 7 to 10 year cycles.

The negatives of using Meranti and Lauan plywood

  • Meranti plywood/Lauan plywood originates from tropical hardwood forests along the Equator that have not been managed for long-term sustainability.
  • RevolutionPly® plywood is consistent in appearance from sheet to sheet with a 100% uniform color making it ideal for many applications including underlayment and high-end millwork.
  • The appearance of Meranti plywood/Lauan plywood varies significantly from shipment to shipment depending on the source.  Light Red Meranti, Dark Red Meranti, White Meranti, and Yellow Meranti are sub species that can be used to source materials.
  • Every sheet of RevolutionPly® plywood has a A grade face that is free of knots and discoloration.
  • Meranti plywood/Lauan plywood is sold as utility or overlay and better grade which allows for the presence of knots, patches, and discoloration.
  • RevolutionPly® plywood has the best packaging in the industry. Every crate is wrapped with a breathable, waterproof poly bag, that covers a full layer of 5 mm cardboard. All the edges of RevolutionPly® have corner guards and edge guards for complete product protection.
  • Meranti plywood/Lauan plywood has been packaged the same for the past 30 years. The crates have weak plywood covers with no corner protection, and an inner liner of thin clear plastic which can lead to end and edge damage and the potential for the growth of mold inside the crates.
